Summit, Missouri facts for kids
Summit is a small, unincorporated community located in the eastern part of Washington County, Missouri, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
This community sits high up on a ridge, about 1,007 feet (or 307 meters) above sea level. It's found right where Missouri Route 8 and the Missouri Pacific Railroad line cross paths. The town of Potosi is only about 4.5 miles (about 7.2 kilometers) away to the northwest along Route 8.
History of Summit
The area now known as Summit had a slightly different name in the past: "Summitville." A post office, which is where mail is handled, was first opened here in 1882 under the name Summitville.
Just four years later, in 1886, the name of the post office was officially changed to Summit. The community kept this name because of its high location. "Summit" means the highest point of a hill or mountain. The post office eventually closed its doors in 1928.
