The Hopkinsville Commercial Historic District is a special part of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. It is a collection of old buildings and areas that are important to history. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is officially recognized for its historical value.

The Story of Hopkinsville

Hopkinsville began with the Wood family from Jonesborough, Tennessee. They gave away five acres of their land to start a new town. This new town would be the "county seat," which is like the main town for the local government. In 1799, the town was planned out and first called Christian Court House.

Later that same year, it was named Elizabeth, after the Woods' oldest daughter. But there was already a town called Elizabethtown nearby. So, in 1804, the town got its current name, Hopkinsville. It was named to honor General Samuel Hopkins, a well-known figure.
