The Horace H. Ellsworth House is a special old house located at 316 Palisado Avenue in Windsor, Connecticut. It was built in 1872 for Horace H. Ellsworth, who was an important person in Windsor. This house is a great example of a building made in the Italianate style using brick.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's recognized as an important historical building in the United States.
About the Ellsworth House
The Horace H. Ellsworth House stands north of Windsor's town center. You can find it on the east side of Palisado Avenue, which is also known as Connecticut Route 159. This road is very old and used to be the main path along the west side of the Connecticut River.
What the House Looks Like
The house is a two-story building made of brick. It has a flat roof with a decorative edge called a cornice. The front of the house has three sections with windows, and the sides have two sections. The windows are rectangular and have stone pieces above and below them.
A porch runs across the front of the house. On the left side, this porch connects to a small, round, open-sided structure that looks like a gazebo. The main door to the house is on the left side. At the back, there's a two-story section that sticks out, with a smaller, one-story section extending even further.
History of the House
The Horace H. Ellsworth House was built in 1872. It's unique in the area because of its Italianate style and because it's made of brick. Many older buildings nearby are built differently.
Horace H. Ellsworth's father was the first person to live in the house. After his father passed away, Horace and his family moved in. The house stayed in the Ellsworth family until 1955.
Horace Ellsworth was a successful businessman in Windsor. He was a director at a local cannery, which is a place where food is preserved in cans. He also had interests in a commercial building and a business that sold lumber.
