Horace G.PappyOwens (born October 9, 1961) is an American basketball coach and a former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Delaware State Hornets men's team.

Horace Owens' Early Life and High School Career

Horace Owens was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Dobbins Technical High School. During his high school years, he was recognized as a top young player. In 1979, he was named a McDonald's All-American. This honor is given to the best high school basketball players in the country.

College Basketball Achievements

Owens went on to play college basketball for the Rhode Island Rams. He was a very successful player there. He is still ranked seventh on the school's all-time scoring list. In his final year, 1983, he received special recognition. He was an honorable mention All-American. He was also chosen for the first team All-Atlantic 10. This shows he was one of the best players in his college league.

NBA Draft and Professional Path

After college, Horace Owens was drafted by the New Jersey Nets. This happened in the 1983 NBA draft, where he was the 44th player picked overall. A short time later, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he never played in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Life After Playing Basketball

Before becoming a full-time coach, Owens worked for the City of Philadelphia. He was a juvenile probation officer for fourteen years. This role involved helping young people.

Horace Owens' Coaching Career

In 2004, Horace Owens began his coaching journey. He joined the La Salle Explorers as an assistant coach. He stayed in this role for fourteen years. In 2018, he took on a new position. He became a special assistant to the head coach, Ashley Howard. In July 2021, Owens moved to the Delaware State Hornets. He is currently an assistant coach for their men's basketball team.

Recognitions and Honors

In 2019, Horace Owens received a special honor. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Black Basketball Hall of Fame. This recognizes his important contributions to basketball in Philadelphia.
