The Hornbine Baptist Church is an old church located at 141 Hornbine Road in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. It was built in 1753. This makes it the oldest Baptist meeting house in southeastern Massachusetts. A meeting house is a place where people meet for religious services.

The church is a simple building made of wood. It has one story and a roof that slopes down on two sides. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard siding. It stands at the corner of Hornbine and Baker Streets, across from the Hornbine School. The front of the church has a covered entrance area with a sloped roof. There are two doors and one window on the front. A "social hall" was added to the side of the building.

History of the Church Building

When the Hornbine Baptist Church was first built in 1753, it was one big open room inside. The pulpit, which is where the preacher stands, was on the north wall.

Changes Over the Years

  • In 1802, the church added balconies, called galleries, at both ends of the building.
  • At the same time, rows of seats, called pews, were put in for people to sit on.
  • The pulpit was also made bigger, with stairs on each side.
  • Later, the inside of the church was changed again. The pulpit was made smaller and moved to the southeast corner.
  • In 1869, the current entrance to the church was added.
  • The social hall, which is a room for gatherings, was also added in 1869. It was made even bigger a few years later.
  • A fancy light fixture, called a chandelier, and four wall lamps were put in during this time. These lights were later changed to use electricity in the 1900s.
  • In the 1870s, sheds were built for horses, but these were taken down in the 1920s.

The church building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States. By 1995, the Baptist group using the church had fewer members. They held services twice a month.

Holy Cross Catholic Church

Sign in 2015 identifies the building as the Holy Cross Catholic Church; smaller type below that says "Unaffiliated with the Roman Church"

Between 2009 and 2015, the church building at 141 Hornbine Road became the home of the Holy Cross Catholic Church. This church is part of a group called the Old Catholic Churches. These churches are independent, meaning they are not connected to the main Roman Catholic Church.
