Horse Chops Island is a small island located off the coast of Labrador in Canada. It sits close to the entrance of Sandwich Bay. The island gets its unique name from its many hills that look like cliffs.
Where is Horse Chops Island?
Horse Chops Island is found in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a small piece of land in the ocean. The island is near the mouth of Sandwich Bay.
A shallow area called Black Duck Cove is on the north side of the island. Just off the northern tip of Horse Chops Island is Munden Island. To the northwest, you can find the Partridge Harbour Islands. These islands surround and protect Partridge Harbour. A long, thin island called Pigeon Island is also nearby, about 1.5 kilometers further northwest.
What's in a Name?
The island's name, Horse Chops Island, comes from its appearance. It has many hills that have steep, cliff-like faces. These cliffs might have reminded early explorers of a horse's chops, or jaws. The highest point on the island is about 121 meters (397 feet) above sea level.
