A Bit of History
Horsepen Creek has a connection to an important event in American history. Part of the famous Battle of Guilford Courthouse took place near the eastern side of the land area that Horsepen Creek drains. This battle was fought during the American Revolutionary War.
Where Does it Flow?
Horsepen Creek starts in Guilford County, North Carolina. It begins near the Piedmont Triad International Airport. This starting point is on a high area that separates the waters flowing into Horsepen Creek from those flowing into the East Fork Deep River.
From there, the creek flows towards the northeast. It eventually meets Reedy Fork in a place called Lake Brandt.
What is a Watershed?
A watershed is like a giant funnel. It is an area of land where all the rain and snowmelt drain into a common body of water, like a river, lake, or ocean. Horsepen Creek's watershed covers about 20.13 square miles (52.1 km²).
This area gets about 45.0 inches (114 cm) of rain each year. About 18% of the land in the Horsepen Creek watershed is covered by forests.
