Horton, Howell County, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Horton is a small, quiet place in the countryside of southern Missouri, in the United States. It's not a big city or town, but what's called an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.

You can find Horton in the northwest part of Howell County. It's nestled within the beautiful Mark Twain National Forest, a large area of protected woodlands. The community is located west of Missouri Route AP and is about half a mile east of the border between Howell County and Douglas County. If you travel a little to the northwest, you'll find the Noblett Lake recreation area on Noblett Creek, which is a popular spot for outdoor activities.

Horton's Early Days

Horton has an interesting past! The community was officially planned and laid out in 1883. It was named after a man named George Horton, who was involved with the railroads at the time.

For a while, Horton was also known by another name: "Cordz." A post office, which is where mail is sent and received, was opened in Cordz in 1886. This post office helped people in the area send and get their letters and packages. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1914. The name "Cordz" came from Henry V. C. Cordz and his wife, Nellie (Haaverson) Cordz. Nellie actually worked as the postmistress, meaning she was in charge of the post office.
