Horton Bay is a small community in Michigan, USA. It is located in Charlevoix County. This area is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with people living there, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It is also a census-designated place (CDP). This means the U.S. Census Bureau has drawn boundaries around it to count its population. In 2020, about 485 people lived here. Horton Bay sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Charlevoix.

History of Horton Bay
Horton Bay was first settled in 1876. A pioneer named Samuel Horton started it as a place for lumbering. Lumbering is the business of cutting down trees and processing wood. The community was on Pine Lake, which is now called Lake Charlevoix.
Early Days and Name Change
When a post office opened in 1879, the community was called Horton's Bay. Alonzo Stroud was the first postmaster. A post office is where mail is sorted and sent. The name was later shortened to Horton Bay in 1894. The post office closed in 1910.
Ernest Hemingway's Connection
The famous writer Ernest Hemingway often visited Horton Bay. He liked to camp and fish in the area. Some of his well-known short stories, called The Nick Adams Stories, are set here. Hemingway even got married in Horton Bay in 1921.
Historic Recognition
Horton Bay was named a Michigan State Historic Site in 1975. This means it's an important historical place in Michigan. Several buildings here are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Horton Bay General Store, the Horton Bay School, and the Red Fox Inn. Being on this list means they are important to the history of the whole country.
Official Boundaries
For the 2010 census, Horton Bay was officially listed as a census-designated place (CDP). This was the first time it had official boundaries and population numbers.
Geography and Location
Horton Bay is located along the northeastern coast of Lake Charlevoix. The U.S. Census Bureau says the Horton Bay CDP covers about 6.17 square miles (15.98 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 4.82 square miles (12.48 square kilometers). The rest, about 1.35 square miles (3.50 square kilometers), is water.
Main Roads
Two important county roads run through or near Horton Bay:
C-56 (Boyne City–Charlevoix Road) runs close to Lake Charlevoix.
C-71 (Horton Bay Road) goes south into the community and connects with C-56.
