Hose Station No. 6 is a historic building in Davenport, Iowa. It's located in a quiet neighborhood in the city's West End. This old fire station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It's one of only two former fire stations still standing in the West End today. The other one is Hose Station No. 7.

History of Firefighting in Davenport

The first group of volunteer firefighters in Davenport started in 1856. They called themselves the Independent Fire Engine and Hose Company. The city's very first firehouse, Hose Station No. 1, was built in 1877 on Perry Street. It was made for a group called the Fire King Engine 2nd Hose Company.

Around the early 1900s, Davenport built several smaller fire stations across the city. Hose Station No. 6 was one of these new stations. Today, this historic building is no longer a fire station. It has been changed into a private home.

Architecture of Hose Station No. 6

Hose Station No. 6 was built in 1910. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style. This style often looks back to classic Roman and Greek designs.

The building has two stories and a rectangular shape. It is made of brick. There is a part of the building that sticks out on the side. At the back, there is a short tower. This tower was used to hang and dry the long fire hoses after they had been used.

The main entrance, where the fire engine used to drive in, has a special concrete frame around it. The side of the building has decorative stone blocks, called quoining, at its corners. The building has rectangular windows all around. The two windows on the second floor of the front of the building have special decorative frames. The roof is a hipped roof, which means it slopes down on all four sides. There's also a small, curved roof window, called a dormer, on the front of the building.
