Hospital is an important district in San José, the capital city of Costa Rica. It's part of the San José canton in the San José province. Think of a district like a neighborhood or a section of a city. Hospital is one of the four main parts that make up downtown San José.
This district is a very busy place! It's known for its many shops and businesses. It also has the most people living in it compared to the other three central districts.
Geography
The Hospital district covers an area of 3.3 square kilometers (about 1.3 square miles). It sits at an elevation of 1160 meters (about 3,800 feet) above sea level. This means it's located quite high up!
Hospital district is right in the middle of its canton. It's special because it only shares borders with other districts within San José. It doesn't touch any other cantons.
Here are the districts it borders, going around like a clock:
- To the north, it borders the Merced district.
- To the east, you'll find the El Carmen and Catedral districts.
- To the south, it borders the San Sebastián and Hatillo districts.
- And to the west, it borders the Mata Redonda district.

Important Places
The Hospital district is home to many "barrios" or neighborhoods. Some of these include Almendares, Ángeles, Bolívar, Cant, and parts of Colón. You can also find La Merced, parts of Pacífico, Pinos, Salubridad, San Bosco, San Francisco, Santa Lucía, and Silos here.
Many important buildings and institutions are located within this district. These include places for government, health, and culture.
- Parque Central de San José: This is a famous park in San José. It's a great place for people to relax and enjoy the city.
- Hospital San Juan de Dios: This is one of the three main hospitals in all of Costa Rica. It helps many people get better when they are sick.
- Hospital de Niños: This hospital is special because it focuses only on helping children. It's a very important place for young patients.
- Teatro Popular Melico Salazar: This is the second most important theater in Costa Rica. The most important is the National Theater. Many shows and performances happen here.
