According to the 2011 census, Mata Redonda had a population of 8,313 people. Over the years, the population has changed. You can see how it grew from just 635 people in 1883 to over 9,000 in 1984 and 2000.
Mata Redonda has one of the lowest population densities in downtown San José. This is because a very large part of the district is taken up by La Sabana Metropolitan Park. This big park means there's less space for buildings and homes, so fewer people live there compared to other areas.
