Hotel History
Opening as the Hilton Hotel
The Hilton Hotel first opened its doors on June 9, 1939. It was the first tall, modern hotel in New Mexico. This hotel was special because it was one of the first in Conrad Hilton's growing hotel chain. It was also the first Hilton hotel outside of Texas.
The architect, Anton F. Korn, designed the building. It had 160 rooms and was ten stories tall. The style was called New Mexico Territorial Revival. This means it used local looks, like earthy colored stucco and brick along the roof. Inside, it had southwest-style wood and furniture.
Changes Over the Years
In 1971, a new Hilton hotel opened in Albuquerque. The original Hilton Hotel was then sold in 1974. It was renamed the Hotel Plaza. Later, in 1981, it was sold again and closed for a while. New owners wanted to call it the Hotel Bradford, but it stayed empty.
Finally, in 1984, the hotel was renovated. It reopened on August 3, 1984, as La Posada de Albuquerque. During this update, the number of rooms was changed to 114.
Becoming Hotel Andaluz
In 2005, Gary Goodman bought the hotel. His company, Goodman Realty Group, started a big renovation. In March 2008, they began a $30 million project to restore the hotel. It reopened as Hotel Andaluz on October 1, 2009.
The hotel is known for being eco-friendly. It earned a special award called LEED Gold certification for its efforts. Many times, Conde Nast has named it one of the best hotels in the U.S. southwest.
Today, Hotel Andaluz has a Spanish-inspired restaurant called Más Tapas y Vino. It also has a rooftop lounge called Ibiza Urban Rooftop Lounge. On weekends, you can enjoy live entertainment there. The hotel also has 6,000 square feet (560 m2) of space for meetings and events.
Returning to Hilton
In 2019, Hotel Andaluz became part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. This brought the hotel back to the Hilton brand family.
Why the Hotel is Important
The Hotel Andaluz is very important to Albuquerque's history. It is seen as the last of the city's three "great southwestern hotels." Other famous hotels like the Alvarado Hotel and the Franciscan Hotel were torn down. The Hilton Hotel, now Hotel Andaluz, shows how buildings were made before World War II. It used modern building methods but also local crafts and materials. For many years, it was a central place for social and political events in the city.
