The Hotel Boulderado is a famous and historic hotel in downtown Boulder, Colorado. It is located at 13th and Spruce Street. This beautiful hotel first opened its doors on New Year's Day in 1909. It was one of the very first hotels in Boulder and is still known for its original 1908 Otis Elevator, which still works today!

The hotel's name combines "Boulder" and "Colorado" so guests would always remember where they stayed. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical building. The Hotel Boulderado is also part of Historic Hotels of America, a special program by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

What's Inside the Hotel?

The Hotel Boulderado has several places to eat. You can find Spruce Farm and Fish, a fancy restaurant, and the Corner Bar, a more relaxed place, right off the main lobby. In the basement, there is a hidden bar called License No. 1. All three places share the same kitchen.

Did you know the Hotel Boulderado is even mentioned in a book? It appears in Stephen King's famous novel Misery.

Hotel Boulderado's History

In 1905, Boulder was a growing city with about 8,000 people. It was home to the University of Colorado and a cultural center called Chautauqua. People even called Boulder the "Athens of the West."

Even though Boulder had some hotels, the city council decided in December 1905 that they needed a bigger, grander hotel. The local newspaper, the Daily Camera, helped spread the idea. Groups from Boulder's Commercial Association worked to raise money. They sold "subscriptions" for $100 each to get funds.

This effort led to the creation of the Boulder Hotel Company, which owned the hotel until 1939.

The Hotel Boulderado officially opened with a big Gala Ball on New Year's Eve in 1908. The very first guests checked in on New Year's Day, 1909. You can still see the first guest book in the main lobby today! The hotel still celebrates its opening every year with a New Year's Eve Gala Ball. It's even been voted the best place to celebrate New Year's Eve by readers of Downtown Boulder.
