The Hotel Roosevelt is a historic building located in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. It was recognized as a special historical place in 1991. Later, in 2015, it became part of the Cedar Rapids Central Business District Commercial Historic District. Today, this building is known as the Roosevelt Lofts and offers apartments for people to live in.
The Hotel Roosevelt's History
The Hotel Roosevelt first opened its doors in 1927. It was designed by the architectural company Krenn & Dato. At that time, it was known as the best hotel in Cedar Rapids.
Building Design and Style
This impressive building stands 12 stories tall. It reaches about 40 meters (132 feet) into the sky. The outside of the building is covered in brick. It also features special decorations in a style called Regency. These decorations include round designs called medallions. There are also panels decorated with garlands, which look like wreaths of flowers or leaves. A row of small, decorative parts called finials runs along the top edge of the roof, known as the parapet.
Inside, the main entrance area, called the lobby, and many public rooms were decorated in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. This style brought back ideas from the Italian Renaissance period, known for its beautiful art and architecture.
From Hotel to Apartments
In the 1990s, the hotel was updated. Some parts became rental apartments, while other areas still worked as hotel rooms. In 2008, a big flood from the Cedar River hit downtown Cedar Rapids. The Hotel Roosevelt was being renovated at the time.
After the flood, a lot more money was spent to fix the building. About $14.4 million was used to create 96 apartment units. These new apartments opened in 2010. The first floor of the building also gained new spaces for businesses.
