Hou Baolin (born November 29, 1917 – died February 4, 1993) was a very famous Chinese performer. He was known for a special kind of comedy called xiangsheng. Many people thought he was one of the best and most important xiangsheng performers of his time.
Hou Baolin also taught many other xiangsheng performers. Some of his students include Ma Ji, Ding Guangquan, Shi Shengjie, and Wu Zhaonan. He was also the father of two other famous performers, Hou Yaohua and Hou Yaowen.

His Early Years and Career
Hou Baolin was born in a city called Tianjin, China, on November 29, 1917. When he was 12 years old, he joined a group that performed Peking opera. This is a traditional Chinese art form that combines music, singing, dance, and acrobatics.
Later, he decided to become a xiangsheng performer instead. Xiangsheng is a type of Chinese stand-up comedy, often performed by two people. Hou Baolin learned this art from a teacher named Zhu Kuoquan.
After China changed and a new government was formed, the people who performed folk arts like xiangsheng became more respected. Hou Baolin joined a special group called the Quyi Art Troupe. He helped make xiangsheng art very popular and important in China.
His Family and Legacy
Hou Baolin's third wife was named Wang Yalan. Together, they had five children: three sons and two daughters. His sons Hou Yaohua and Hou Yaowen also became well-known performers.
Hou Baolin passed away on February 4, 1993, when he was 76 years old. He was buried in a special place in Beijing, China, called Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery. His work continues to influence Chinese comedy today.
