Hou Feng was a famous Chinese engineer. He was born on February 3, 1928, and passed away on November 7, 2020. He was really good at something called plant breeding. This means he helped create new and better kinds of plants.
He became very well known for his special cucumber plants. These cucumbers could fight off diseases, which was a huge help for farmers. Because of his amazing work with cucumbers, people called him the "Cucumber King."
Hou Feng was also a respected member of important groups. These included the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He also helped make decisions for China as a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Biography
Hou Feng was born in a place called Pingdu, in Shandong, China. This was on February 3, 1928. When he was older, in September 1950, he started studying at China Agricultural University. He chose to study horticulture, which is the science of growing plants.
After finishing his studies in July 1954, he began working for the government in Tianjin. He helped with farming, forests, and water. In October 1955, he moved to the Tianjin Vegetable Research Institute. Here, he became a research director in 1969. Later, in 1979, he became the deputy director.
In August 1983, he became the vice-president of the Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This is a big science group that studies farming. From 1985 to 1998, he also led the Tianjin Cucumber Research Institute. Even after that, he stayed on as an honorary president. Hou Feng passed away in Tianjin on November 7, 2020.
Honours and Awards
Hou Feng received many important awards for his work. These awards showed how much his efforts helped farming and science in China.
- 1999: He became a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). This is a very high honour for engineers in China. It means he was recognized as one of the best in his field.
- 2002: He was given the National Labor Medal. This award celebrates people who have made great contributions to their country through their hard work.
