Houghton is a small, unincorporated community located in Brown County, South Dakota, in the United States. The number of people living in Houghton isn't officially counted by the government's Census Bureau.
The Story of Houghton
Houghton was officially planned and laid out in 1886. When a place is "platted," it means someone drew up a map showing where streets, lots, and buildings would go. This community was named after C. W. Houghton, who was one of the first people to own the land where the town was built. Also in 1886, a post office was opened in Houghton, which helped people send and receive mail.
