History of Hourglass Corsets
Hourglass corsets became popular in the 1830s. People in Europe and the US started wearing them. Before this, fashion often had waistlines just below the bust, like in the Empire silhouette. But Victorian fashion wanted to show off the natural waist. Corsets helped make it even smaller.
The hourglass corset made the waist look smaller right away. It focused on a small area around the waist. Instead of squeezing the ribs, it pushed and moved body tissue above and below the waist.
This hourglass shape became the most famous corset look. You often see it in movies or pictures. It might show a woman holding onto something while someone pulls her corset strings very tight. The hourglass corset made waists look tiny. It also made the bust, shoulders, and hips look wider. This look went well with very wide skirts, big sleeves, and sloped shoulders. All these parts together created the "wide-slim-wide" hourglass figure.
Hourglass shapes stayed popular throughout the 1800s. Even as other clothes changed, the corset remained. In England, France, and America, rich people and even some royal families wore these corsets.
Later, skirts and sleeves became smaller. By the Edwardian era, fashion favored a taller, thinner look. Princess line dresses became popular in the 1880s. These dresses had no seam at the waist. Instead, they had long seams that ran down the whole dress, fitting closely to the body. Hourglass corsets changed too. They started to make the body look taller and thinner, even above the waist.
Different Kinds of Corsets
At first, hourglass corsets were not laced as tightly as other styles. For example, the straight-fronted corset became popular in the early 1900s. Corsets were still common, but they no longer had the very wide-narrow-wide shape of the hourglass.
Straight-fronted corsets are still made today. Some people use them for waist training after having a baby.
Pipe-stem Waist Corsets
A pipe-stem waist is a very specific body shape made by a certain corset. This corset was designed to squeeze the waist for a longer distance above the natural waistline. These were never very common. They could be uncomfortable because they pressed the rib cage inwards.
Reports from the 1800s say that pipe-stem waists could be up to 15 cm (6 inches) tall.
People who wanted this shape had to train their bodies for many years. Only a few examples of this extreme look exist.
Concerns About Corsets
People often said that corsets were bad for a person's health. While some thought they helped with posture, many doctors advised against wearing tight clothes for a long time.
Tight corsets could change the shape of the rib cage. They could also irritate the skin. Wearing them too tightly could make it harder to breathe deeply. They might also weaken the muscles that support the back and chest. Some long-term problems thought to be caused by tight corsets included a smaller pelvis, problems with digestion, and issues with having children.
