Jordan's House of Representatives
The House of Representatives is a very important part of Jordan's government. It's where people who are chosen by citizens come together to talk about new laws and decide what's best for the country. Think of it as the main place where the people's voices are heard in lawmaking. It works alongside the Senate, and together they form the Jordanian Parliament. This parliament is responsible for making all the laws in Jordan.
How the House Works
The House of Representatives has 130 members. These members are elected by the people of Jordan to represent them. They serve for a term of four years. This means they are chosen for a specific time to do their job.
The Speaker
The leader of the House of Representatives is called the Speaker. The Speaker helps make sure meetings run smoothly. They also represent the House in different events. The current Speaker is Ahmed Safadi.
Getting Elected
Members of the House are chosen through a special voting system. This system is called "proportional representation." It means that political parties get a number of seats in the House that is similar to the percentage of votes they receive.
There are also special seats reserved for certain groups. For example, 15 seats are for women. Nine seats are for Christians, and three seats are for people from the Chechen and Circassian communities. This helps make sure many different groups are represented in the government. The last election for the House was on 10 November 2020.
Where They Meet
The House of Representatives meets in Al-Abdali, which is a part of Amman, the capital city of Jordan. This is where all the important discussions and decisions happen.
