The House of Sanseverino (also called San Severino) was a very old and important noble family from Italy. They were very powerful in the area known as the Kingdom of Naples.
History of the Sanseverino Family
This powerful family owned many lands and territories. They controlled about 300 areas called "fiefs," which were like large estates. They also held 40 "counties," nine "marquessates," twelve "duchies," and ten "principalities." These were all different types of important territories or titles, mostly located in southern Italy, in regions like Calabria, Campania, Basilicata, and Apulia.
Many important people came from the Sanseverino family. Some became high-ranking church officials called cardinals. Others were viceroys, who were like governors ruling a country or province as the king's representative. There were also marshals, who were high-ranking military leaders, and condottieri, who were leaders of mercenary soldiers.
