Basilicata is a beautiful region located in the south of Italy. Its main city and capital is Potenza. In 2004, about 597,768 people lived there.
This region is very mountainous. Because of the mountains, it was hard for people to travel and communicate until modern times. This also meant Basilicata was one of the less developed parts of Italy for a long time.
Basilicata touches the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Taranto at its lowest points. The highest mountain in the area is Monte Pollino, which is 2,233 meters (7,325 feet) tall. The region also has an old, inactive volcano called Monte Vulture. The total area of Basilicata is about 9,992 square kilometers (3,858 square miles).
Basilicata used to be one of the poorest regions in Italy. However, it has become richer in recent years. This is thanks to the discovery of oil in the region.
What are Basilicata's Provinces?
