The Household No. 1 Site is a special place in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's an archaeological site, which means it's a spot where people find clues about the past. This site is located near Timms Lane in Rostraver Township. It sits on a high piece of land, like a small cliff, overlooking the Youghiogheny River.

Discovering the Past at Household No. 1

People in the local area knew about this site way back in the early 1900s. An amateur archaeologist named George Fisher kept the best records of the area. He studied the site from 1900 to 1950.

More detailed information came from an investigation in 1980. This study happened because new baseball fields were being planned nearby. During the investigation, archaeologists found many important artifacts. Because of these discoveries, the baseball fields were moved. This allowed experts to keep digging and learning more. They found out that the site was once a village of the Monongahela people.

Life in the Monongahela Village

The findings at the Household No. 1 Site showed a lot about how the Monongahela people lived. It seems they lived in a culture where fighting was common. Archaeologists found many burials at the site. For example, sixteen burials were found in the area of just one house.

They also found many projectile points, like arrowheads or spear tips. These were a much larger part of the discoveries than everyday tools. This suggests that the people spent a lot of time preparing for or dealing with conflict.

The small number of artifacts overall tells us something important. It means the village was likely only lived in for a short time. Also, its location on a river bluff was probably chosen for defense. These discoveries, like those at other Monongahela villages, show that the people at Household No. 1 lived in a very strong and protective community.

A Protected Historical Site

In 1986, the Household No. 1 Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical location. It was listed because of its great value for understanding archaeology and the past.
