Howard David's Career in Sports Broadcasting
Howard David has been the radio play-by-play announcer for several professional sports teams. He worked for NBA teams like the New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics. He also announced games for NFL teams, including the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. David also called games for the New York Cosmos soccer team. He was also the voice for Princeton University basketball and football.
Starting Out in Broadcasting
Howard David began his career as a morning DJ in Trenton, New Jersey. A person named Bill Schwing from Mizlou Television Network discovered him. David quickly became a top announcer for Mizlou. He covered more than 300 sports events for them. These events included big college football games, NIT basketball, and NASL soccer.
Working for National Radio Networks
David also worked for the CBS Radio network, which later became Westwood One. He was the main play-by-play voice for their Sunday Night Football broadcasts until 1995. After that, he took over for Jack Buck on the network's Monday Night Football broadcasts.
In 1998, David also started working for WFAN. This was another CBS company. He became the play-by-play voice for the New York Jets. This happened after Ian Eagle moved to CBS television's NFL coverage.
When the Jets played on Monday night, David's work with the Jets came first. This meant someone else had to fill in for him at Westwood One. For example, in the 1999 playoffs, the Jets played the Broncos. David went with the Jets team to Denver. Another announcer, John Rooney, called the other game.
After the 1999 season, the Jets moved their radio broadcasts back to WABC. David went with the team there. He also kept his contract with Westwood One. After Super Bowl XXXVI, David left the Jets and Westwood One. He took a job in Miami. There, he was the radio voice for the Miami Dolphins on WQAM. He also had his own talk show called "Moe Howard David."
His contract with the Dolphins ended after the 2004 season. The new coach, Nick Saban, decided not to renew his contract. After this, David returned to national broadcasts. He became one of the NFL voices for SportsUSA. He called games for them until 2008.
More Recent Work
David later became one of Westwood One's NFL voices again. He replaced Bill Rosinski for their Sunday doubleheader coverage. He also filled in for Dave Sims on Sunday nights when Sims was busy. David worked with Tony Boselli in the booth until 2012. Tom McCarthy then took over for David. Other NFL play-by-play announcers for Dial Global (which owned Westwood One) included Kevin Kugler, Kevin Harlan, Dave Sims, and Ian Eagle.
In 2006, David provided coverage for many events at the World Series of Poker. He described the poker hands for Sirius Satellite Radio.
In 2012, David became the play-by-play voice for the United Football League broadcasts. These games were shown on the CBS Sports Network. In 2013, he also filled in as a commentator for Major League Baseball on Fox.
