Howell Mountain has a long and interesting past.
Early Inhabitants
Long ago, the land around Howell Mountain was home to the Wappo people. They were Native Americans who lived in this area for many centuries. They knew the land well and lived off its natural resources.
European Settlement
In the 1840s, people from Europe and other parts of America began to settle on Howell Mountain. One of the first settlers was George Yount, a well-known person in the Napa Valley. His grandson-in-law, William Campbell Watson, played a big role in the area's development.
Farming and Growth
In the 1870s, William Campbell Watson started planting grapevines on the mountain. This was the beginning of the famous wine industry in the region. Over time, many wineries were built. People also came to Howell Mountain for its health spas, which were popular places to relax and get well in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Recent Events
In August 2020, Howell Mountain faced a big challenge. The area had to be evacuated because of the Hennessey Fire. This was a very large wildfire that burned over 315,000 acres (about 127,000 hectares) across five counties, including parts near Howell Mountain. It was a difficult time for the community, but residents worked together to stay safe.
