A Brave Leader: Hristo Uzunov
Early Life and Becoming a Revolutionary

Hristo Uzunov was born in 1878 in Ohrid. At that time, Ohrid was part of the Ottoman Empire. His parents were active in the Bulgarian National Revival, a movement to bring back Bulgarian culture. His father later became a librarian in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
Hristo joined the revolutionary movement in 1896. He was still a student at the Bulgarian Men's High School of Thessaloniki. After finishing school, he worked as a teacher. He taught in schools supported by the Bulgarian Exarchate.
Hristo was arrested in 1902. This happened after a Serbian teacher was killed in Ohrid. Hristo was held in prison in Bitola until March 1903.
Fighting for Freedom
Hristo played a big part in the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising in 1903. This was a major rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. After another leader, Toma Davidov, died in March 1903, Hristo took charge. He became the main leader of the revolutionary group in the Ohrid area.
On July 23, 1903, Hristo's armed group, called a cheta, received its flag. This happened in the village of Kuratica, near Ohrid. Hristo and his cheta then joined the Ilinden Uprising. From 1904 to 1905, Hristo also fought against other armed groups. He worked to solve problems within his own organization.
His Final Stand
In 1905, Hristo Uzunov traveled to Bitola and Kičevo. He went with his cheta to try and gain control of the region. On April 23, 1905, they entered the village of Cer.
Hristo Uzunov died in Cer on April 24, 1905. He is buried there, in the village where he passed away.
