Early Life and Education
Hrvoje Šarinić was born in a place called Sušak. He studied at the University of Zagreb, where he focused on architecture and construction. After finishing his studies, he started a business career.
Time in France
Šarinić spent 24 years living and working in Paris, France, from 1963 to 1987. Because of this, he was a citizen of both Croatia and France.
Political Career
After the first democratic elections were held in Croatia, Hrvoje Šarinić joined the government of President Franjo Tuđman. He became the head of President Tuđman's personal office.
Serving as Prime Minister
In 1992, after parliamentary elections, Šarinić became the Prime Minister of Croatia. He was a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) political party.
During his time as prime minister, his government focused mostly on issues inside Croatia. One big topic was the privatization of companies that were owned by the state. This meant that these companies were sold to private owners. Some of these sales caused a lot of discussion and debate.
The Croatian economy faced challenges during this period. Šarinić's popularity decreased, and in February 1993, his party even lost local elections in his home region. Because of these reasons, and the ongoing war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, President Tuđman decided to replace him with Nikica Valentić in April 1993.
After Being Prime Minister
Even after his time as prime minister, Šarinić remained an important figure. He continued to be a close advisor to President Tuđman. For a while, he also led Croatia's security services.
He was often in the public eye because of his diplomatic work. This included important meetings and negotiations with Slobodan Milošević, who was a leader from Serbia. In 1995, he was the official representative for the government in the Erdut Agreement, which was a peace agreement.
In 1998, Šarinić had a disagreement with another high-ranking politician from his party, Ivić Pašalić. When President Tuđman supported Pašalić, Šarinić resigned from his position. In 2000, he briefly joined a new political party called the Democratic Centre.
Later Years and Death
Hrvoje Šarinić passed away on July 21, 2017, in Zagreb, Croatia. He was 82 years old. He was buried at Mirogoj five days later.
