Hu Mei (born 2 September 1958) is a famous Chinese film director and television director. She also works as a producer. She is known for directing many popular TV shows and movies.
Hu Mei is considered a "Fifth Generation" director. This means she graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in the early 1980s. Many talented directors, like Chen Kaige, were her classmates.
In 1997, she directed the historical TV series Yongzheng Dynasty. This show was very popular in China. She has also directed other well-known TV series. These include The Emperor in Han Dynasty (2005) and Qiao's Grand Courtyard (2006). Another one is Cao Cao (2014).
In 2010, Hu Mei directed the film Confucius. This movie starred Chow Yun-fat as the main character. It was released in Beijing in January 2010.
Hu Mei's Early Life and Career
Hu Mei was born in Beijing, China, on September 2, 1958. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a singer. She learned to play the piano when she was very young.
In 1978, the Beijing Film Academy reopened. With her father's encouragement, Hu Mei joined the directing class. She graduated in 1982.
After graduating, she started working at the Bayi Film Studio. In 1984, she directed her first film, Women's Chamber. Two years later, her film Times Away from War won several international awards.
Hu Mei later spent almost ten years directing television commercials. She also started directing more commercial films. Her TV series Yongzheng Dynasty was a huge success. Since then, she has been a top director in China for television shows.
In 2019, Hu Mei won an award for Best Director. This was for her film Enter The Forbidden City. She received the award at the Chinese American Film Festival in Los Angeles.
