Meet the Huara Spiders
Huara spiders are a type of genus. In science, a genus is a group of very similar living things. Think of it like a family name for different kinds of spiders that are closely related. All the known Huara spiders live only in New Zealand.
Where Do Huara Spiders Live?
These unique spiders are found in New Zealand. They are often called "intertidal spiders" because they live in the intertidal zone. This is the part of the seashore that is covered by water during high tide and exposed to air during low tide. It's a tough place to live, but these spiders are well-adapted to it!
Different Kinds of Huara Spiders
As of April 2019, scientists have found twelve different kinds, or species, of Huara spiders. Each species is a specific type of spider within the Huara genus. All of them are found in New Zealand.
Here are the twelve known species:
- Huara antarctica (Berland, 1931) – Found in New Zealand (Auckland Islands)
- Huara chapmanae Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara decorata Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara dolosa Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara grossa Forster, 1964 – Found in New Zealand (Auckland Islands)
- Huara hastata Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara inflata Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara kikkawa Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara marplesi Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara mura Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
- Huara ovalis (Hogg, 1909) – Found in New Zealand (Snares Islands)
- Huara pudica Forster & Wilton, 1973 – Found in New Zealand
Who Discovered Huara Spiders?
The first Huara spider was described by a scientist named Raymond Robert Forster in 1964. He was a very important arachnologist, which is a scientist who studies spiders and other arachnids. His work helped us learn a lot about these interesting creatures.
