Huayna Cotoni is located in the Lima Region of Peru. Specifically, it is in the Yauyos Province. The mountain sits on the border where three districts meet: Ayaviri, Quinches, and Tanta.
What's in a Name?
The name Huayna Cotoni comes from the Aymara language. The word wayna means "young man" or "bachelor". The word qutu means "heap" or "pile". The suffix -ni means "the one with". So, the name can mean "the one with a heap" or "young Qutuni", referring to a nearby mountain called Qutuni.
Where is it Located?
Huayna Cotoni is part of a smaller mountain group called Pichqa Waqra. In the Quechua language, Pichqa Waqra means "five horns". This area is on the southern edge of the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve. This reserve is a protected natural area known for its beautiful landscapes.
The mountain is situated between two lakes. To its north is a lake called Tikllaqucha. To its south is another lake also named Huayna Cotoni. It is located southwest of the Qutuni peak and south of the Aqupallqa peak.
