Hub River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Hub River (Urdu: دریائے حب) is an important river located in Lasbela, Balochistan, Pakistan. This river acts as a natural border between the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan, just west of the big city of Karachi. It plays a vital role in providing water and supporting wildlife in the region.

About the Hub River

The Hub River flows through a dry area in Pakistan. Its path helps mark the boundary between two important provinces, Sindh and Balochistan. This makes it a significant geographical feature. The river's water is crucial for the communities and the environment around it, especially in a region that doesn't get a lot of rain.

The Hub Dam: A Lifeline

A very important structure on the Hub River is the Hub Dam. This large reservoir was built in 1981. It's located in the dry plains north of Karachi. The dam collects and stores water, which is then used for two main purposes:

  • Irrigation: It provides water for farming in the Lasbela district of Balochistan, helping crops grow in dry conditions.
  • Drinking Water: It supplies fresh drinking water to the large city of Karachi, which is home to millions of people.

The Hub Dam area is also a special place for nature. It's a key spot where many waterbirds stop during their long migrations or spend the winter. The reservoir also has different kinds of fish. When there's a lot of water in the dam, the number of fish increases, making it a lively aquatic habitat. In 2001, the Hub Dam was officially recognized as a wetland of international importance.

Amazing Animals of the Hub River

The Hub River and its dam are home to various animals, especially fish and birds. One of the most famous fish found here is the Mahseer (Tor putitora). This is a native river fish that can grow very large, sometimes up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) long! People often fish for Mahseer in the Hub River. Besides the Mahseer, many other fish species thrive in the reservoir, especially when water levels are high. The dam also serves as a crucial resting and feeding ground for many types of waterbirds, making it a great spot for birdwatching.
