The Huey P. Newton Gun Club is a group named after Huey P. Newton. He was a co-founder of the Black Panther Party. This party worked for the rights of African Americans.
The club teaches people how to defend themselves. They also hold protests where they carry guns. These protests support the gun rights of African Americans. They also speak out against police brutality. The club was started by Rakem Balogun, Yafeuh Balogun, and Babu Omowale.
The group first gained attention in August 2014. They were noticed for their open carry patrols. This means they walked in public with their firearms visible. Yafeuh Balogun hoped the club would grow. He wanted it to become a well-known gun-rights group.
What the Club Does
In August 2014, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club held its first armed patrol. This happened in a mostly black neighborhood in South Dallas. They protested in an area where a past incident involving police had occurred. After this, the club received many donations. Their number of members also grew quickly. The club held another protest in October of the same year.
In 2016, the club joined a counter-protest. This was at the Muhammad Mosque in South Dallas. It was a response to a protest by another group. Both groups were armed. Police were also there. The protest ended peacefully without any violence.
Later in 2016, Rakem and Yafeuh Balogun stepped back from the group. Rakem Balogun mentioned that another group was gaining too much influence. This group was the New Black Panther Party. However, in 2019, Rakem Balogun was seen leading a demonstration. Some people in this demonstration wore Huey P. Newton Gun Club clothing.
Because of different ideas, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club Alpha company was formed. Yafeuh Balogun created this new part of the club. He wanted to stick to the original ideas of the Black Panther Party. These ideas were about community and fairness, especially those of Huey P. Newton.
In May 2019, nine armed members appeared at a protest. This demonstration took place in Dayton, Ohio.
