The Huey P. Newton Gun Club is a group named after Huey P. Newton. He was a co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party.
This group teaches people how to defend themselves. They have also held protests where they openly carry guns. These protests support the rights of African Americans to own guns. They also protest against unfair police actions. The club was started by Rakem Balogun, Yafeuh Balogun, and Babu Omowale.
The group first gained national attention in August 2014. This was because of their patrols where they openly carried guns. Yafeuh Balogun hoped the club would grow. He wanted it to become a well-known group that supports gun rights.
What the Club Does
In August 2014, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club held its first open gun patrol. This happened in a mostly Black neighborhood in South Dallas. Police had killed an unarmed Black man there in 2012. After this, Rakem Balogun said that the club received many donations. Its number of members also more than doubled. The club held another protest in October of the same year.
In 2016, the club took part in a counter-protest. This was at the Muhammad Mosque in South Dallas. It was a response to a protest by a group called the Bureau of American Islamic Relations (BAIR). Both groups were armed, and police were there. The protest ended quickly and peacefully.
Also in 2016, Rakem and Yafeuh Balogun stepped away from the group. Rakem Balogun said this was because another group, the New Black Panther Party, was becoming too influential. He felt this group had different ideas about how Black people should live. However, in a 2019 TV interview, Rakem Balogun was seen leading a protest. Some people at this protest wore Huey P. Newton Gun Club clothing.
Because of disagreements about the club's direction, Yafeuh Balogun formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club Alpha company. This new group aimed to stick to the original ideas of the Black Panther Party, especially those of Huey P. Newton. These ideas focused on community support and fairness for all.
In May 2019, nine armed members of the club appeared at a protest. This demonstration took place in Dayton, Ohio.
