Huff (also known as Hufftown or Huff Community) is a ghost town in Archer County, Texas, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have moved away, leaving it mostly empty. Huff is part of the larger Wichita Falls, Texas area. It is located next to Lake Creek. You can find it about 8 miles (13 km) south of Lakeside City, Texas, and just east of Texas State Highway 79.
History
How Huff Began
The town of Huff was named after Charles C. Huff. He was a lawyer for the Wichita Falls and Southern Railway. In 1908, the railway company started the town site. They used it as a "switching site." This means it was a place where trains could change tracks.
Early Life in Huff
The railway also built a large concrete tank near the tracks. This tank held a whole rail car of water. The railroad brought in this water for the community to use. It was their source of fresh water.
From 1909 to 1913, Huff had its own post office. There was also a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a school. These places helped the small community grow.
What Happened to Huff
By 1936, most of the town was gone. Only the school and a few scattered homes remained. The old school building became a meeting place for local cattle ranchers. They used it as a community center. Over time, Huff became a ghost town.
