Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Hugh Evelyn, 5th Baronet (born 31 January 1769 – died 28 August 1848) was a British nobleman with a special title called a baronet. He also served as an officer in the Royal Navy.

About Sir Hugh Evelyn's Family

Hugh Evelyn was the youngest son of Charles Evelyn. His mother was Philippa Wright, whose father, Fortunatus Wright, was a famous privateer. Privateers were like legal pirates who helped their country during wars.

Hugh's family had a long history of baronets. A baronet is a title passed down through families, similar to a knight, but it's inherited. Hugh's grandfather was also named Charles Evelyn. This Charles was the brother of Sir John Evelyn, 2nd Baronet, and the second son of Sir John Evelyn, 1st Baronet of Wotton.

The title of baronet eventually passed to Hugh because the previous baronet, Sir Frederick Evelyn, did not have any children. This meant the title would go to the next closest male relative, which was Sir John Evelyn, 4th Baronet, and then eventually to Hugh.

Sir Hugh's Life and Legacy

Hugh Evelyn was born on 31 January 1769 in Totnes, a town in Devon, England. He joined the Royal Navy and became an officer, serving his country at sea.

Sir Hugh married twice. His first wife was Henrietta Harrison, whom he married in 1815. After she passed away in 1836, he married Mary Hathaway in the same year. Mary was the daughter of John Kennedy.

Sir Hugh faced some difficulties in his life. He had problems with people who managed his money. He ended up in legal trouble and owed money for court costs. Because he couldn't pay these costs, he spent a long time in prison.

Sir Hugh Evelyn passed away on 28 August 1848, at the age of 79, in Forest Hill, London. He was buried in Wotton, Surrey. Since he did not have any children, the baronet title ended with him. His wife, Mary, lived until 5 May 1883.
