Hugh de Balliol (died 1229) was an important English nobleman. He was known as the Lord of Bywell, Barnard Castle, and Gainford. Hugh was the son of Eustace de Balliol and Petronilla FitzPiers. He was a strong supporter of King John of England during a big conflict called the Barons' War (1215–1217).
Hugh de Balliol: A Supporter of Kings
Hugh de Balliol was the oldest son of Eustace de Balliol. He took over his father's lands and titles around 1209. Hugh and his brother Bernard were very loyal to King John. Hugh even named his own son John, likely after the king.
Defending the Border
In 1216, Hugh de Balliol helped protect England's northern border. He defended it against King Alexander II of Scotland. Alexander II tried to attack Hugh's home, Barnard Castle. However, the Scottish king stopped his attack. This happened after Alexander II's brother-in-law, Eustace de Vesci, passed away.
Hugh de Balliol passed away in 1229. After his death, his son John inherited the main Balliol family estates.
