Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Hugh de Paduinan (born around 1140, died 1189) was an important knight from long ago. He was part Scottish and part Norman. He was also a Knight Templar, which was a special group of warrior monks. Sir Hugh started the family known as the Clan Houston. He was given land in Scotland, and a village called Houston was named after him, meaning 'Hugh's town'.

Sir Hugh's Life

Hugh de Paduinan was born in 1140. His family had roots in England and Normandy, a region in France. It is thought that he married the daughter of a Scottish noble. His son, Reginald, was set to inherit his lands and title. Sir Hugh also followed another important knight, Sir Walter Fitzalan.

Lands and Family

When Malcolm IV of Scotland was king, Sir Hugh received a large area of land called Kilpeter. This land is now close to the modern villages of Houston and Killellan in Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was given this land by Baldwin of Biggar, who was the Sheriff of Lanark. A sheriff back then was like a powerful local leader. Baldwin might have even been Sir Hugh's father-in-law.

Sir Hugh's family, the Houstons, continued to own these lands for many years. They were known as the Lairds of Houston. In 1740, the lands were sold to Alexander Speirs. He was a wealthy merchant from Glasgow who made his money from tobacco. The main village in that area is still called Houston today.

Knight Templar and Death

Sir Hugh and his family often signed important legal papers, especially those related to Scottish churches. Sir Hugh died in 1189 in the Holy Land, a region in the Middle East. It is believed he may have been among the Knights Templar who died in a big battle called the Battle of Hattin.
