The Sweet History of Hui Lau Shan
Hui Lau Shan was started by Hui Chi-Yuk in the 1960s. The very first shop opened in Yuen Long, New Territories. It began by selling traditional Chinese items like turtle jelly and herbal teas.
Growing with New Treats
In the 1980s, Hui Lau Shan started to offer more than just teas. They added tasty desserts and snacks. These included popular items like turnip cake and creamy coconut milk. This was a big step for the company.
The Mango Revolution
The 1990s brought a fresh change to Hui Lau Shan. The third generation of the Hui family started using fresh fruits in their desserts. This led to the creation of the famous "Mango Sago". This dessert became a huge hit!
Hui Lau Shan became very well-known for its mango treats. They used a lot of mangoes every year. They even used up to a thousand tonnes of special carabao mangoes for their desserts.
Expanding Across the World
Since the 1990s, Hui Lau Shan has grown a lot. They opened many shops outside of Hong Kong. You can find their dessert shops in places like China, Malaysia, the United States, and South Korea. There are over 260 Hui Lau Shan shops around the world.
In 2007, the family sold the Hong Kong part of the business. It was bought by a Malaysian company called Navis Capital Partners. Later, in 2015, Royal Dynasty International Holding Company bought the entire franchise.
Business Challenges
In 2020, the Hong Kong part of Hui Lau Shan faced some difficulties. The company said that fewer customers were visiting their shops. However, a solution was found, and the company continued its operations.
