The Story of Hui Lau Shan
Hui Lau Shan was started by a person named Hui Chi-Yuk. This was in the 1960s. The very first shop opened in a place called Yuen Long, New Territories. At the beginning, it was a simple herbal shop. It sold traditional items like turtle jelly and herbal teas.
From Teas to Tasty Desserts
In the 1980s, Hui Lau Shan started to offer more items. They began selling desserts and snacks. These included things like turnip cake and sweet coconut milk. This was a big change from just selling herbal teas.
The Mango Revolution
The biggest change came in the 1990s. The third generation of the Hui family joined the business. They had a new idea: using fresh fruits in their desserts. They created the famous "Mango Sago". This dessert quickly became a hit.
Hui Lau Shan uses a lot of mangoes. Every year, they use about a thousand tonnes of carabao mangoes. These are special mangoes used in their desserts. Since the 1990s, the chain has grown a lot. It now has over 260 shops. You can find them in China, Malaysia, the United States, and South Korea.
Changes in Ownership
In 2007, the family sold the Hong Kong part of Hui Lau Shan. It was bought by a Malaysian company. Later, in 2015, Royal Dynasty International Holding Company bought the entire chain. This company continues to run Hui Lau Shan today.
