Hulda Marie Bentzen was born in Bergen, Norway, on December 18, 1858. Her father, Einar Bentzen, was a sea captain. Her mother was Karen Bertine Gullaksen.

Becoming a Photographer

Hulda learned photography from a skilled photographer named Max Behrends. After her training, she decided to open her own business. In 1886, she started her first photography studio in Bergen.

Later, around the early 1900s, another photographer took over her Bergen studio. Hulda then moved and opened a new photography business in the town of Voss. She continued her work there for many years. In 1918, she decided to sell her business. However, she still kept busy reproducing some of her older photographs. Hulda was also known for creating many beautiful postcards. Her talent was recognized when she received a medal at the Bergen Exhibition in 1898.

A Pioneer in Photography

Hulda Marie Bentzen was one of several brave women who started photography studios in Norway during that time. Back then, photography was a new and growing field. It was also a field mostly dominated by men.

Many early female photographers faced challenges. However, some, like Hulda, became very successful. Other notable women photographers from Norway included Marie Høeg in Horten, Louise Abel in Christiania, Louise Wold in Holmestrand, and Augusta Solberg in Lillehammer. In Bergen, Hulda worked alongside another talented woman photographer, Agnes Nyblin. These women helped shape the early history of photography in Norway.
