Humane Canada is a group in Canada that works to protect animals. It used to be called the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS). This non-profit organization helps humane societies, SPCAs, and animal rescue groups across the country. Their main goal is to make sure animals are treated kindly and to stop animal cruelty.

A Look at Humane Canada's History

Humane Canada started in 1957 in Ottawa. It was first known as the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. Some of its founders included Richard Taylor and Alne Cameron. They both led the Ottawa Humane Society. Senator Frederic McGrand and lawyer Gord Gunn also helped start the group. Gord Gunn had seen animals suffer during World War I.

Today, Barbara Cartwright is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She joined Humane Canada in July 2011. The group changed its public name to Humane Canada in 2018. However, its official legal name is still the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.

How Humane Canada Helps Animals

Humane Canada works on many projects to help animals. They focus on pets, livestock (farm animals), and animal protection laws.

Protecting Pets

Humane Canada is a founding member of the National Companion Animal Coalition. This group helps set rules for things like microchips for pets. They also work on preventing dog bites. The organization helps fight against puppy mills. These are places where animals are bred in poor conditions. They also work with cities on rules for dogs and cats.

Improving Farm Animal Care

The organization works with Canadian farmers. They help improve how animals are cared for on farms. This includes how animals are moved and how they are treated at slaughter.

Changing Laws for Animals

Humane Canada tries to improve laws about animals. This helps make sure that people who are cruel to animals can be punished. They want stronger laws to protect all animals.

National Animal Welfare Conference

Humane Canada holds big meetings about animal welfare. These meetings are called national conferences. At the 2014 conference, Jane Goodall spoke. She is a famous scientist who studies chimpanzees. Other talks included helping community pets and discussing trap-neuter-return. This method helps control community cat populations humanely. Animal testing was also a topic of discussion. The 2015 conference took place in May in Richmond, British Columbia.

How Humane Canada Gets Money

Humane Canada does not get money from the government. They depend on donations from people like you. They also get money from companies that sponsor them. Some membership fees from other animal groups also help. This money helps them run their programs to protect animals.

How Humane Canada is Managed

A group of volunteers leads Humane Canada. This group is called the Board of Directors. Many board members work for other animal welfare groups. The board meets four times a year. They also have smaller committees that meet more often.

Who Belongs to Humane Canada

In 2013, Humane Canada had 45 member organizations. These included humane societies and SPCAs. These groups work all across Canada to help animals.
