Hume was once a small place in Butte County, California. It's known as a "former settlement," which means it used to be a community where people lived and worked, but it no longer exists as a town today.

What Was Hume?

Hume was a very small community that appeared on maps for a short time. It was located about 3.5 miles (or 5.6 kilometers) east-northeast of a town called Biggs. The area where Hume once stood is about 112 feet (or 34 meters) above sea level.

Where Was Hume Located?

Hume was in Butte County, which is in the northern part of California. It was quite close to the town of Biggs. Imagine a map of California; Hume would have been a tiny dot in the central-northern part of the state.

The Railroad Connection

One important thing about Hume was its connection to a railroad. It was built along the Northern Electric Railroad. This railroad later became known as the Sacramento Northern. Railroads were super important back then! They helped people travel and moved goods from one place to another. They were like the highways of their time.

The railroad line that passed through Hume is now abandoned. This means trains no longer use those tracks.

Why Did Hume Disappear?

Hume was a very short-lived settlement. It was still shown on maps in 1912, but after that, it seems to have faded away. Many small settlements like Hume disappeared because people moved to bigger towns for jobs, or the industries that supported them (like logging or mining) closed down. Sometimes, when a railroad line is no longer used, the small communities along it also disappear.
