Biggs's History: How It Started

The Colonia Building, a historic hotel in Biggs, built in 1905.

Biggs got its start as "Biggs Station" in 1871 when a post office was opened. The name was shortened to Biggs in 1884. The city officially became a city (was incorporated) in 1903.

Biggs is named after a man named Maj. Marion Biggs. He was the first person to ship grain by train from this location. This was a very important step for the area's farming business.

An interesting fact is that the family of the famous scientist Linus Pauling lived in Biggs for a while in 1877.

In 2002, the city's mayor received a funny suggestion. The California Milk Processor Board, known for the "Got Milk?" ads, asked if Biggs would change its name to "Got Milk?". The city council thought about it but decided to keep the name Biggs.

More recently, in 2019, Biggs became a sister city to Woburn, Massachusetts. This means the two cities have a special friendship and connection.
