The Hundred Flowers Awards (Chinese: 大众电影百花奖; pinyin: Dàzhòng Diànyǐng Bǎihuā Jiǎng) are super important film awards in China. They are like the Golden Globes in the United States. These awards celebrate the best movies from mainland China, Hong Kong cinema, and Cinema of Taiwan.
The China Film Association started these awards in 1962. A popular magazine called Popular Cinema (大众电影) helped to create them. This magazine was very widely read in China.
In the past, readers of Popular Cinema voted for the winners. Now, people can vote in many ways. They can use their phones, the internet, or send text messages. The winners get a special statue. It looks like a goddess of Flowers (花神).

A Look Back: History of the Awards
The second Hundred Flowers Awards happened in 1963. After that, there was a long break. The awards did not happen again until 1980. This was due to a period called the Cultural Revolution. From 1980 until 2004, the awards were held every year.
Since 2004, the Hundred Flowers Awards have been held every two years. They take turns with another big award, the Golden Rooster Awards. In 1992, these two major awards joined together for a big national festival.
From 1980 to 2004, the awards picked three "Best Pictures" each year. These were the films with the most votes. Since 2006, movies from the past two years can be nominated. This includes Chinese-language films from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Now, only one film wins "Best Picture." Two other films are chosen as runners-up.
How Winners Are Chosen: New Rules
The China Film Association changed the voting rules in 2006. This made the process fairer and more exciting.
First Step: Picking Top Films
First, a group of 100 cinema managers and members of the China Film Association vote. They pick 8 to 10 movies. These movies must have earned more than five million yuan at the box office in China. These films become the "pre-candidate" list.
Second Step: Public Voting
Next, the public gets to vote. People can choose five nominated films in each award category. They can vote online, using their mobile phones, through magazines, or by text message. Each movie that gets nominated receives a special certificate. It is called a "Hundred Flowers Awards Nomination Certificate."
Final Step: The Big Decision
For the final vote, a special group is chosen. A Chinese official picks 101 audience members by chance. These are people who voted in the second round. These 101 people watch all the nominated movies. Then, they vote secretly. After their votes are counted, the winners are announced!
