The Hundred Flowers Awards (Chinese: 大众电影百花奖; pinyin: Dàzhòng Diànyǐng Bǎihuā Jiǎng) are very important awards for movies in China. They are like the Golden Globes in the United States. These awards celebrate the best films from mainland China, Hong Kong cinema, and Cinema of Taiwan.

The China Film Association started these awards in 1962. A popular magazine called Popular Cinema (大众电影) helped to create them. This magazine was very widely read in China.

In the past, only readers of Popular Cinema could vote for the awards. Now, many more people can vote. You can vote by sending a text message, using the internet, or calling in. Winners receive a special statue. It looks like a beautiful goddess of Flowers (花神).

A Look Back: History of the Awards

The Hundred Flowers Awards began in 1962. The second awards were held in 1963. After that, there was a long break until 1980. This break happened because of the Cultural Revolution, a time of big changes and challenges in China.

From 1980 to 2004, the awards were given out every year. But since 2004, they happen every two years. They now take turns with another major film award, the Golden Rooster Awards.

In 1992, the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards joined together. They became part of one big national film festival.

How Films Are Chosen

From 1980 to 2004, the awards picked three films as the "Best Pictures" each year. These were the films with the most votes. Since 2006, films from Taiwan and Hong Kong can also win awards.

Also, since 2006, films released in the past two years can be considered. Now, only one film is chosen as the "Best Picture." Two other films are named as runners-up.

How Voting Works Now

Since 2006, the China Film Association has made new rules for voting. These rules help make sure the awards are fair and exciting.

First Round of Voting

First, a group of experts helps choose the top films. This group includes 100 cinema managers and members of the China Film Association. They look at films that have earned more than five million yuan at the box office in mainland China. From these, they pick 8 to 10 films to be "pre-candidates."

Second Round: Public Nominations

Next, the public gets to vote! People can choose five nominations in each award category. They can vote using the internet, mobile phones, magazines, or text messages. Each film or person chosen in this round gets a special "Hundred Flowers Awards Nomination Certificate."

Final Round: Picking the Winners

For the final vote, a special group is chosen. A Chinese official randomly picks 101 audience members. These are people who voted in the second round. These 101 people get to watch all the nominated films in a special screening.

After watching, these 101 audience members vote in secret. Their votes decide who wins each award. This way, the winners are truly chosen by the people who love movies!
