A Look Back: Huntington's History
Huntington started as a town built around coal mining. In 1887, a company called The Missouri, Kansas, & Texas Coal Company looked at the area. They chose this spot for a town because there was coal nearby, but not directly under where the town would be built.
The town officially became a city on February 4, 1888. It was named after J. B. Huntington. He was a popular mine superintendent who sadly passed away after his horse fell from a bridge.
