The Huntington is a special type of European Pear. It first grew in New Rochelle, New York, in the northeastern United States. A man named James P. Huntington found the original pear tree in the woods when it was still small. He moved it to his own yard on Main Street in the middle of town.

In 1856, when the tree was about 20 years old, a nursery owner named Stephen P. Carpenter introduced it to others. He owned the Huguenot Nurseries in New Rochelle. Long ago, New Rochelle was famous for growing many trees and plants. The Huguenot settlers who lived there were very good at growing fruits and flowers. Other pear types like the 'Churchland' and 'Parsonage' also came from this area. The Lawton blackberry, which was the first widely grown blackberry in the country, also started here.

The Huntington Pear: What Makes It Special?

The Huntington pear is a medium-sized fruit. It has a strong, slightly tilted shape. Its skin is a greenish-yellow color. You'll notice a clear rusty-brown crown at the top. There are also rusty marks spread across the whole pear, especially near the bottom.

This pear keeps well, staying good long after it turns a bright yellow or orange. The inside of the pear is white and very juicy. It has a taste that is particularly refreshing. The Huntington pear is usually ready to eat around the end of September or the first week of October.
