Who Was Huntoon Lake Named After?

Huntoon Lake is named after a man named Daniel Huntoon. He was one of the first people to settle in this area. Daniel Huntoon came to Waterford in 1832. He moved there from New Hampshire.

Daniel Huntoon bought a large piece of land. It was about 165 acres. This land was on the south side of the lake. His sons, Philetus, Phineas, and Horace, also came with him. After Daniel passed away, his sons continued to live and work in Waterford. Philetus took care of the family farm. Phineas later owned the Waterford General Store.
