A view of Hura

Hura, also known as Houra, is a town in the Southern District of Israel. It's a Bedouin town located near the city of Beersheba and next to Meitar. Hura was started in 1989 to help the Negev Bedouin people settle down. It became a local council in 1996. In 2017, about 20,782 people lived there.

Hura is one of seven special towns built for Bedouin people in the Negev desert. These towns have good plans and modern facilities. The other six towns are Ar'arat an-Naqab, Lakiya, Shaqib al-Salam, Kuseife, Tel as-Sabi, and Rahat, which is the biggest of them all.

History of Hura and the Bedouin People

Before Israel was created, the Negev Bedouin people were semi-nomadic. This means they moved around a lot. Over time, especially during the Ottoman Empire's rule, they started to settle down more.

The Israeli government continued this idea of helping Bedouin people settle. In the 1950s, many Bedouin families were moved to a specific area. Later, seven towns were built just for them. Hura is one of these towns.

These towns were designed to offer a better life. They have good services like sanitation, health care, and schools. This was important because the Bedouin population in Israel grows very quickly. About 60% of Bedouin citizens now live in planned villages like Hura.

Who Lives in Hura?

Hura is mainly home to members of three Bedouin family groups. These are the Abu Alkian, Al-naami, and Al-Nabari clans. In December 2010, the town had about 17,500 people. By the end of 2009, there were 16,600 residents. Hura covers an area of 6,646 dunams, which is a unit of land measurement.

Hura provides its residents with important services. These include water, electricity, and other basic needs. The government encourages Bedouin tribes to move to Hura. They do this by selling land plots and homes at a very low price.

One project is called "Women in Hura." In this project, 120 local women prepare meals for schoolchildren. This business makes a lot of money each year. Another project is "Green Hura." This project has invested money in planting trees and making the village look nicer.

The "Wadi Attir" project is a farm that focuses on ecological agriculture and tourism. There are also courses for Bedouin women to learn about textile processing, sewing, and making clothes. These projects help the community grow and offer new opportunities.
