Hurricane Deck is a small mountain range located in Santa Barbara County, California. It's part of the huge Los Padres National Forest. This mountain range is completely inside the San Rafael Wilderness, which is a protected natural area.
Hurricane Deck helps separate two important waterways. It lies between the main part of the Sisquoc River and one of its smaller streams, called Manzana Creek. It's also the northernmost part of the San Rafael Mountains. To its north, you'll find the Sierra Madre Mountains.
What is Hurricane Deck?
Hurricane Deck is a unique mountain range. It's mostly made up of one large block of special sandstone. This sandstone was formed a very long time ago, during a period called the Miocene epoch. This means it was created from sediments that settled in the ocean millions of years ago.
Because it's one big block of rock, some people think of Hurricane Deck as a single, giant mountain. This type of large mountain mass is sometimes called a massif.
Exploring Hurricane Deck
If you like hiking, there's a trail that goes along the top of Hurricane Deck. It's called the Hurricane Deck Trail. However, this trail isn't often worked on or kept clear, so it can be a bit wild and challenging to hike.
