Hurricane Irene was a powerful storm that formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It caused a lot of damage in Florida and North Carolina in October 1999. Irene started as a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on October 13.

Hurricane Irene brought a lot of rain to Florida. It was similar to other very wet hurricanes from the 1930s and 1940s. In North Carolina and Virginia, the storm dropped over 10 inches of rain. That's a huge amount of water!
