Hurricane Sally facts for kids
Hurricane Sally was a powerful tropical storm that formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It brought strong winds and heavy rain to the United States Gulf Coast in September 2020. The storm affected states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Sally first started near the Bahamas, then moved towards Florida before growing into a tropical storm.
As Hurricane Sally got closer, weather experts issued warnings for tropical storms and hurricanes from Louisiana all the way to northwest Florida. Millions of people living in these areas got ready for the storm. Many prepared their homes, while others decided to leave the area to stay safe.
The storm eventually made landfall, meaning it hit the coast, in Alabama and northwestern Florida. At that time, it was a Category 2 hurricane. This means it had very strong winds, between 96 and 110 miles per hour (154 to 177 kilometers per hour), which can cause a lot of damage.
