Hwangnam bread, also known as Gyeongju bread, is a special sweet pastry from Gyeongju City, South Korea. It's a small, tasty treat filled with red bean paste. This bread first appeared in 1939 at a bakery in Hwangnam-dong, a neighborhood in central Gyeongju.
It has become very popular all over South Korea. Many companies in Gyeongju now make this bread. You can buy it in many places in Gyeongju and also at special stores across the country.
What is Gyeongju Bread?
Gyeongju bread is made from a mix of eggs and wheat flour. The delicious red bean filling makes up almost 70% of the pastry! Traditionally, a pretty chrysanthemum flower design is pressed onto the top of each bread.
A Special Korean Treat
The Korean government has officially recognized Gyeongju bread as an "outstanding regional specialty." This means it's a very important and unique food from the Gyeongju area. It's a must-try snack if you ever visit South Korea!
